Hot Breaking News : Cool Queenslander dethrones SOPA King KK on 1st playoff hole.
The new SSS 07 champ is Tim Marchbank who handled the pressure well till the end, he hardly raised a sweat & went close to setting a new "old layout" course record. This was Edd’s 9th sizzler & the first event on the first ADG Tour. It’s taken oz disc golfers a while to get this happening, 2007 is a great year to start being the 50th year of the frisbee & the ‘Living Legend’ Leigh Bird also turns 50.
Eddison Pk DGC looked at it’s best with pruned trees & recently mowed grass. The usual sizzler weather, very hot with strong afternoon winds was absent. The morning was cool & cloudy with light winds, by lunchtime it started warming abit when the clouds parted with some gusty winds for the 2nd round. The only hot stuff was the disc golf by all players especially two visiting young’uns, Jack Lawrence & Oceania champ Andrew Ferguson. Both have accurate long drives & with some extra work on their putting they will be able to challenge the top players.
The controversial third hole was the best indicator of hot & cold DG. Some took on the scary "tree tunnel" and failed as no one aced this short par 3. You have to be in hot top form to hit the bullseye through a tunnel of trees narrowing towards the polehole. Good players can birdie this hole & there were four in the first round : Tim, Andrew Dowdy (‘AD’), Christian Ward & Jack; Luke Williams was the only birdie in the second round ; most players parred & some scored 4’s & two got a 5.
All divisions had close contests from the first hole till the very last.
In the Masters division local Jim Montgomery was equal with co -TD Nick Summers after round 1, Peter Dunn was 4 behind. At the end Jim prevailed winning by 2 from Nick, 3rd was Peter.
In Advanced Men Jason McFarlane won by 1 from Jack, 3rd was Damian Jaccoud.
In Open Men Kurt Karlsson was equal with Luke after the 1st round on 56, (13 under par), Tim was on 57, local hotshots Christian & AD both on 61 & Andrew Ferguson on 62. At the end of round 2 there were still 2 leaders, Kurt & Tim on 110, Luke was third & AD with injured foot got 4th. So a sudden death playoff on the 1st hole was decided; Tim’s hyzer drive was near perfect landing metres from the hole; Kurt’s hyzer drive was abit too high & right hitting a tree & dropping down still about 40 metres from the hole. Kurt’s only chance to stay in the game was a long range birdie but his blast missed & Tim had an easy putt to become the 07 Sizzler champ. Thanks to Syd flying Discs for your supplies of plastic. Thanks to all the players who came & supported the event, all enjoyed the day full of friendly frisbee fun!
Total scores are below, hole by hole scores will be published in the next "Chainmail".
