Sparks Summers Sizzler 2009

What a great tourney with fanastic player spirit & fun; i had a PB & was leading after round 1, but it didn’t last & the 09 Sparks Summers Sizzler champ is Luke Williams.

Players were welcomed to the course by a new sign & the park was mowed & cleared of branches, looking good even in the rain. The morning weather was cool, windy & raining so players voted for a later start & went to nearby markets for coffee. Those who believed the weather forecast & stayed indoors were led astray, by mid morn the rain had stopped. The course had baked for the last fortnight so the rain soaked in quickly & didn’t cause slippy tees or slow up rollers. The day remained cool, sunny & windy, ideal for disc golf in summer !!

I’ll keep this report short & not bore you with hole by hole stats. Those who know the various Edd layouts will relate to these highligths

Round 1 Walkabout Course

On hole # 7 Luke does a huge drive thru the main gap in the trees, then a short drive into the mound for an easy eagle;
on the tricky #13 Jason does great placements of drive & approach to get the only birdie on this hole; on #16 Bill & I do our best long forehand rollers & we were the only birdies on this tough, disliked & feared par 5; on # 18 Nick’s low flat drives gets close & he scores the only birdie on this hole.

Round 2 Old Course Layout

Hole #3, the triangular tree tunnel, Luke does a low drive straight thru the apex of the tunnel & misses the top of the hole by inches, after i saw this i thought it was the throw of the tourney; the "Bloodnut" would luv Luke’s ace attempt as he always wanted to make it a mando to go up the tunnel.

#4 off the mound to the ex-mural corner hole, Nick does his best forehand roller thru the trees stopping about 30m from the hole, the place Kurt gets to when he throws a huge anhzyer drive over the trees for his long range eagle putt which he usually gets, Nick got the only birdie on this hole;

# 5 Pete does a top forehand drive along the OB channel back into the open area & was the only one to birdie this hole.

All the above were worthy contenders for throw of the tourney award but the best for the day was yet to come:

#9 possibly Eddison’s signature hole, off the mound across open fairway with hole well protected by a large tree on left & rows of trees on right, strong eastly winds. Luke throws his Destroyer hard & fast, the hyzer fade nails the gap in the trees on the right & skips thru the alley of trees to within 2m of the hole for a put in eagle. This was the best throw i have had the pleasure to see on this hole, & Luke was the 1st person to finally do the 99% near perfect drive.

I did enjoy losing to such disc golf brillance & i was happy not letting Nick repeat his win over me at Nats 08, hooray a great day!
