Another extremely hot day in Melbourne for the second Guerilla Disc Golf event. I think players are definitely looking forward to some cooler weather for the next event. I was armed with about 10 litres of water and assorted beverages as well as plenty of food, all of which was gone by the end of the day. Setup was relatively smooth this time with a few holes changing due to fallen trees and slightly more difficult tee placements (courtesy of Ian Bycroft).

Once again it was a late (false) start at about 11am with five players, however when the group was about to head off 3 more players arrived and so we did a quick rework of the scorecards and prepared some more new players for a round. Three new players participated this time around, Philip Stahle, Anita Huang and Guy (if you are reading this, please send us your last name for the record). A total of 8 players participated and by the time we got going, it was already quite hot.

Much to everyone’s dismay, the wind was really kicking up, particularly for the long downhill drives. A few discs were sent way over to the right despite big hyzer on throws endangering a few of the players’ cars which were parked off the number 2 fairway. Fortunately the OB grass and creek bed did not come into play anywhere near as much as at the last event (no lost discs).

Philip Stahle, having completed a 40km bike ride just prior to arriving got straight into things. Often opting to use an Innova XD off the tee rather than a driver, he did extremely well considering it was his first time around.

There were some great shots during the round. Andrew Boylett peeled off a nice side-arm flick on hole 4. His overpowered shot dropped as it hit a tree only two metres from the basket assuring an easy birdie. By hole 3, first-timer Guy was already getting his disc to s-curve! Also on debut, Anita Huang managed to sink a few putts from around 8 – 10 metres from the basket.

Tim Baker hit a tree on hole 3 dropping his drive short, however recovered beautifully with a 70m+ drive parked right under the basket. Several other times during the day, we saw Tim recovering from difficult spots with perfectly executed side-arm flicks. Kathrin Centler was as usual, consistently on the fairway and seemed well suited to the tighter more technical holes. Although producing nothing spectacular, Ian Bycroft was consistently hovering around par, picking up the odd birdie. I managed a deuce on hole 4 (the ace hole, no aces yet though) and a nice save on hole 3 putting from behind a tree.

Rather than play a full 36 holes, the event has been modified slightly now to play a full round of 18 and then a safari style 9 hole round. As the group was reduced to 4 players for the final-9 and I was too busy eating lunch to set-up the tee markers, we made up the 9 holes on the fly. With some modifications, we may use them next time. These 9 holes played a little more technical but there was less terrain variation to cover.

It was hot, it was windy but as always, it was a great time (excluding packing up the baskets).
