With a big gap between the last Guerilla Disc Golf, players were keen to get out and have a throw on Sunday. 12 players turned out for a fun, low key event at the mysterious course location. For those arriving on time there was still quite a strong drizzle left over from the morning however by tee time the skies were starting to clear.
As the weather started to come good, there was a quick players meeting then the players were split up into 3 groups of 4 players for a shotgun start. As the event only consisted of a single competition round, most of the top four players had no idea how their competition was doing until they came in with their scorecards. Course feedback for this new, shorter Par 3 layout was largely positive and the cooler weather (compared to previous events) meant that this was probably the most comfortable Guerilla played, despite the wet ground.
In the Men’s Division Ian Bycroft managed a narrow single stroke victory over Paul Arden shooting a 50 for the current and only course record. Matt Cutler, coming down from Sydney and visiting from the UK snared 3rd place with a 54 and Andrew ‘Fergie’ Ferguson took 4th with a 56. Ian takes away 25 ADGTour points, a DGA FlexFit Hat and a Dodgebee Key ring for his trouble.
For the first time in recent memory there was a significant percentage (25%) of players in the Women’s division. Cassie Anderson and Kathrin Centler battled it out in the Advanced Women’s Division while June Blenkhorn represented the Recreational Women’s division. In the end Cassie was able to get up and beat Kathrin by 7 strokes shooting a 61 as well as beating 3 of the Men’s Division players, taking away a nice DGA FlexFit Hat and Dodgebee Key ring.
CTP was on Hole 9 which was a longer downhill hole but wide open and good for long arms. Ian Bycroft decided to win everything and so took out the CTP as well. In the women’s Cassie also took CTP with a drive only about 7-8m shorter than Ian’s. Some small prizes were given away for the CTP winners as well.
After the C-Tier competition round, three players decided to call it a day and the remaining 9 decided to have a round of best shot doubles with Ian Bycroft going around playing best shot with himself. This proved to be a huge mistake as Ian was clearly on fire after taking away the competition round. Parking drives on holes 1 and 3 it was clear from the outset that he was going to have a good round. Particularly when he got to reshoot all of his bad shots a second time.
The Ace Pot didn’t go off for this event (it was only offered in the competition round), so the $12 pot will jackpot to the next event. Agonisingly, Drew Muller hit a spectacular ace on Hole 16 during the social doubles round later in the afternoon. The jubilation was heard on the other side of the course by the other doubles group, it was too loud to be anything but an ace. Hole 16 saw only 2 birdies during the competition round.
With a reasonable turnout, another Guerilla Disc Golf event will be organised shortly with date and location to be confirmed.
